MacGuffin
noun Mac·Guf·fin \ mə-ˈgə-fən \ variants: or McGuffin
: A plot device, usually an object, that motivates the characters and advances the story, particularly one whose importance is accepted completely by the story's characters, yet from the audience's perspective is obscured or ambiguous. Scrutinizing the MacGuffin may challenge one's suspension of disbelief.
